What's up with housing in the UK?

Said by many to be in crisis, house prices more than trebled between 1997 and 2007. Since those heady days prices have fallen by some 8% as of May 2011 following the global credit crunch but still remain significantly above the long-run average house price to earnings ratio with mortgages harder to obtain as lenders demand higher deposits. A recent (May 2011) survey for the Halifax found 64% of non home-owners aged 20-45 believe they have no prospect of ownership.
